The Last Lecture – Leadership Lesson 9

I found the Randy Pausch Last Lecture video and book very uplifting and inspiring – full of life and leadership lessons. If you haven’t seen the video, you can see it here … and you can get the book here.

No Job Is Beneath You

Everyone needs to read this segment in the book – page 168 … it’s really about entitlement and how damaging it can be to you as a person and to your company.

How often do you hear someone say “it’s not my job” ? Oh they don’t have to actually say the words, they shuffle off mumbling – they do the activity with an attitude – their body language screams “it’s not my job”.

Leaders need to lead by example with this one … first, they must believe “no job is beneath them”. Then they do what they’ve got to do to get the job done. Some examples – do the dishes at the office lunch – answer your own phone – be the receptionist for a couple of hours – do someone elses job in the warehouse or manufacturing area for a day – go visit customers – help putting away the office Christmas decorations – help someone do their job; whatever it takes.

Leading by example will demonstrate to others “no job is beneath you” and that if you can do it without an attitude so can (should) they. The leader can further demonstrate the importance and value of teamwork – If the leader can chip in for the betterment of the team so can (should) they.

For those that don’t get it and possess an “it’s not my job” mind set – the boss needs to address this before it catches on with others and becomes part of your culture. Then entitlement really sets in and you’ve got a problem with productivity, quality, customer satisfaction and profitability.

Don’t let it happen to your company. Address it from day one by communicating your expectations. Then if you see it – hear it – sense it … then fix it.
